Circus Factory are delighted to offer a total of 9 circus arts residency opportunities through an open call as part of our professional development programme 2022 – supported by Arts Council Ireland
In 2022 we are equally prioritising 5 areas
- Circus Factory Members
- Artists from, or creating work for members of marginalised groups* in society
- Street Theatre
- Ground Based Circus
- Aerial Focused

There are two forms of residency type on offer:
FACTORY DAYS
Factory Days aims to offer funding support and resources for investigative and creative research open to mid-career and established circus and street theatre artists, solo or companies. We welcome proposals at any stage of development : from initial investigations to the realisation of a work in development.
3 residencies of 2 weeks each are available
Spring : March 21st – April 29th
Summer : May 2nd – 27th / June 6th – 17th
Autumn : Aug 1st – Sept 9th
Artists are encouraged to give a public sharing of their residency findings at the end of their term. This may be through images, video, or public showings.
Factory Days Supports include:
Artist Stipend of €1,500.
Travel and accommodation stipend of max €1,200 per residency – submission of receipts required.
20 hours per week (max 4 hours per day) private use of Circus Factory Training Venue between 1pm and 5pm. Valued at €500 per week
24 hour access to Circus Factory Training Venue – To be shared with Circus Factory Members outside of private use.
Use of Circus Factory equipment resources.
Mentoring support from Circus Factory Artistic Director and Associate Artists, Loosysmokes (subject to availability)
Mentoring and administrative In-kind support from Circus Factory staff, Artistic Director and Associate Artists, including technical and digital support to assist artists in the realisation of their residency under conditional Covid19 restrictions at the time.
FACTORY BITES
Factory Bites aims to offer funding support and resources for investigative and creative research open to emerging and mid-career circus and street theatre artists, solo or companies.
We welcome proposals, which include the use of a mentor, and are focused on creative exploration at any stage of development: from initial investigations to the realisation of a work in development aimed at artists at any stage of career development.
6 individual weeks are available in
Spring : March 21st – April 29th
Summer : May 2nd – 27th / June 6th – 17th
Autumn : Aug 1st – Sept 9th

Artist Stipend of €500, plus €500 stipend of towards mentor/director/choreographer/dramaturg
20 hours per week (max 4 hours per day) private use of Circus Factory Training Venue between 1pm and 5pm. Valued at €500 per week
24 hour access to Circus Factory Training Venue – To be shared with Circus Factory Members outside private use.
Use of Circus Factory equipment resources.

- Cv – 2 pages Max – Please include all artists/collaborators/mentors who are involved. Max 5 Cvs
- Proposal details: 500 words Max
This should detail:
- Why do you wish to apply for the residency?
- The artistic ambition of your proposal?
- Methods you will use to engage in your proposal?
- How your proposal impacts your overall work and artistic development.
- Outcomes you hope to arrive at by the end of your residency & the desired outcome of your proposal
- Who you see as the future audience of your proposal
- Any funding support already secured
- Supporting Images – Up to 3 Individual images may be submitted however it is ideal to collate them into a single PDF for upload – Please provide date and context for imagery
- Supporting Performing Links – Prepare the links by embedding them in a pdf document for upload – Please provide date and context for videos with a runtime of 10 minutes max. Please make sure to include any passwords or access codes should the video be privately listed.
Proposed Dates for Residency:
You will be asked to select the time frame and input the week/s that suit your proposal
Circus Factory will endeavour to match all successful artists with their proposed times however there may be an amount of negotiations around available times in order to suit everyone’s arrangements.
Assessment Guidelines
Eligibility:
- Irish artists, and Irish artists resident abroad* are eligible to apply.
*All applicants should be considerate of Covid19 travel restrictions at the time of application and at the date of potential travel.
- To be considered as a Circus Factory member you must have an active Professional Membership
- Deadline for applications is: Friday 27th January 5.30pm. Any applications received after that date cannot be assessed.
- Previous recipients of Circus Factory Residency Programmes may re-apply.
- Selected artists must be available for negotiations with Circus Factory as to optimum time frames for the finalised residency dates.
- Applicants can apply for both Factory Days or Factory Bites but not for the same proposal.
- All applicants must agree to provide a Covid 19 Risk Assessment for their proposed activities and agree to working within Circus Factory Covid 19 protocols should their application be successful and understand that Circus Factory Covid 19 protocols are a living document, subject to constant review and potential change.

Priorities
- 2 Residencies will be offered to Circus Factory Members
- 1 Residencies for artists from or making work for marginalised groups* in society
- 2 Residencies to Street Theatre
- 2 Residencies to Ground Based Circus
- 2 Residencies to Aerial Focused

All proposals will be assessed by a panel comprising of Circus Factory Artistic Director, Selected Circus Factory Board Members and Circus Factory Associate Artists 2022, Elaine McCague and Jonah McGreevy of Loosysmokes, based on the following merits:
